Music is a fundamental part of our life because it helps us transmit and intensify our emotions. When we’re sad we choose to listen to songs with a slower melody, and when we’re happy, we prefer something a little livelier.
Many people have at least one favorite song, or one which they identify with. The truth is that we could come up with a list of songs that put us in a good mood or make us happy. But, according to science, there is one in particular which should be at the top of the list.
Jacob Jolij, cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Groningen, took charge of studying pop songs from the last fifty years and applying an equation. The formula dictates that a tempo of 150 beats per second, plus upbeat lyrics and a great performance is what makes for a happy song. This led Jacob to the conclusion that ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen, is the happiest song in the world.
According to Jacob Jolij, the key to a happy song is the lyrics, the tempo and the rhythm. Whoever has heard it agrees that this song, sung by Freddie Mercury, generates energy and puts you in a good mood. Dr. Jolij’s top 10 list is headed by Queen. Here is the full list:
1. Don’t stop me now – Queen
2. Dancing Queen – ABBA
3. Good Vibrations – Beach Boys
4. Uptown girl – Billy Joel
5. Eye of the tiger – Survivor
6. I’m a believer – The Monkees
7. Girls just wanna have fun – Cyndi Lauper
8. Livin’ on a prayer – Bon Jovi
